Description: eHuman is an ONR funded Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) program: http://robotics.eecs.berkeley.edu/ehumans/. The program includes scientists and specialists in control theory, cognitive science, AI, neuroscience, robotics, and human- machine interfaces from University of California, Berkeley, UCLA, and Stanford University to develop a fundamentally new science of “human centered automation” or “embedded humans.” The goal of the program is to guarantee that human decision makers embedded in the midst of either fully or partially automated systems can execute missions with variability in the environment and their cognitive abilities.
The perspective post-doctoral scholar will work closely with the members in the Robotics lab and the other MURI teams at large, under the supervision of Dean Shankar Sastry. Specific areas of interest include SLAM, Human-Robot Collaboration, and Augmented Reality.
The initial appointment is 100% time for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year, dependent upon job performance and funding and will start as soon as possible. Starting salaries are typically in the range of $50,000 to $65,000 (levels 4-5) per year and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Working with Berkeley Faculty and staff, and with collaborators at other institutions, to develop research topics in human-centered autonomous systems, with a focus on perception and augmented reality;
Researching and writing papers of publication quality, under the direction of faculty and staff;
Possible interdisciplinary collaboration on complex issues at the intersection of computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and user interface design;
Assisting group staff in organizing and running one or more workshops and/or conferences;
Speaking at conferences, workshops, and to the funding agency about research initiatives;
Assisting with other necessary aspects of conference, workshop, and report production.
Completed all requirements for Ph.D. or equivalent degree by time of application focus in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science
By the start date candidate should have:
Excellent research, analytical and writing skills;
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
Self-starter able to prioritize and function both independently and collaboratively;
Willingness to travel nationally and internationally.
Experience in either in C++ programming and algorithm optimization especially for Robot OS and/or Android, or in robotics hardware rapid prototyping and design.
