Description: A PhD position is available at the OPTIMA group, Medical University of Vienna (http://optima.meduniwien.ac.at). The group specializes in medical image computing applications in ophthalmology.
The focus of the research project is on learning and predicting patient-specific disease progression and treatment response by combining imaging (longitudinal series of 3D optical coherence tomography images) and non-imaging (genetics) data using methods from the fields of computational anatomy and machine learning. Advancements will have a real world impact on clinical management of patients suffering from macular diseases, a leading cause of blindness today.
The ideal candidate would have a masters degree in computer vision, machine learning, statistics, biomedical imaging or related discipline, and possess strong programming (C/C++, Python, MATLAB, Julia) and applied math skills. Prior experience with medical images is beneficial but not necessary. Excellent analytical, interpersonal, as well as written and oral communication skills in English are essential.
The student will be immersed into an interdisciplinary environment working closely with a team of computer scientists, software engineers and medical doctors. The group has access to extremely large sets of ophthalmic images and is well-equipped with a dedicated high-performance computing cluster containing the latest generation CPU/GPUs.
The group keeps close collaboration with several high-performance academic research institutions, as well as good partnership with imaging device and pharmaceutical companies.

The PhD position is fully funded for three years (gross salary of ~28000 eur/year).
