Title:POSTDOCTORAL POSITION — COMPUTER VISION IN BIOLOGY
Posted: April 25, 2016
Company/Institution: VIMS Lab, University of Delaware
Location: Delaware, USA
Department: Department of Computer & Information Sciences and Plant & Soil Sciences
Description: Job description: A postdoc position is available to work at the interface of computer vision, microscopy and genome science. The successful candidate will contribute to
elucidating the genetics of disease resistance using data from 3D microscopy(micrometer scale) imaged across macro-scale (millimeter scale) sample spaces.
Responsibilities will include the development of validated classification and segmentation methods to quantify variation in pathogenesis in relation to host and
pathogen cells. Some features can be classified and segmented by cell-specific fluorophore differentiation, but other features require novel methods. Addressing
challenges of scale space correlation is of also interest to relate data from different imaging platforms for advanced insight into biological systems. This is a recurring annual appointment for at least two years and based on progress and funding.
Starting salary is $45k/yr plus full benefits.
Background: This position builds off the development of a cutting-edge automated 3D confocal imaging platform to examine host-fungal interactions. The project is focused
on interactions between plant leaf organs and fungi that create infection networks similar to biological neural networks. This interdisciplinary project to investigate
complex biological specimens introduces exciting challenges that will drive advances in computer vision research.
Qualifications: Candidates must have a strong background in quantitative computer science with expertise in image feature learning and segmentation on large datasets.
A strong command of computer programming is required (shell environment, C/C++ or other languages, scripting, Python, Matlab etc.). The successful candidate will be
expected to work independently and in teams, publish peer-reviewed literature, present at conferences and participate in project meetings.
Mentoring and Training Environment: The postdoc will have the opportunity to work with multiple PIs and personnel at UD’s Video/Image Modeling and Synthesis (VIMS)
lab, the Bio-Imaging Center at the Delaware Biotechnology Institute, and UD’s Plant Genetics and Breeding lab. Beyond this integrated team at UD, the project involves six
additional research labs at institutions across the U.S.
Application Instructions: Send the following material to Dr. Chandra Kambhamettu, email@example.com: (i) cover letter indicating how this position is a good fit for you; (ii)a curriculum vitae; (iii) names and contact information for three references.
