The primary activity will be to work as part of a team to develop next generation Human Interface devices based on optical sensing. Additionally, this engineer will support several groups throughout Synaptics which are involved in Product Research, Product Deployment, and Exploratory Research. This engineer will design optical components used in sensors, and develop full optical models for scoping and evaluating these components and sensors. Further, this engineer will develop and perform the fundamental optical characterization of the new products as well and their sub-components. This characterization will be used to calibrate models, help with development decisions and provide the basis for production yield testing. This engineer will participate in the exploratory research and development of new product concepts that will be the candidates for next generation products. This engineer will also support the manufacturing teams in development and deployment of optical testing tools.
•Develop and maintain optical models of products in development
•Develop characterization methods and apparatus
•Characterize devices and their components as part of development program
•As part of the Research and Development teams, implement exploratory research in new methods and approaches to human interface using optical sensors
•Hands-on testing of products under development
•Interface with and support both exploratory research and product development teams
•Provide timely, thorough and accurate reports of technology assessments
•Develop an understanding of sensor parameters effecting performance
•Provide general optics support for test hardware needed across the organization
•Masters degree or higher in physics, optical engineering or related fields.
•Experience modelling optical devices and systems, including diffractive effects
•Experience with modeling and designing of high-volume, low-cost consumer optical solutions
•Willingness to work both hands-on and through collaboration with others
•Familiarity with consumer electronic devices
•3-D CAD modelling skills strongly desired
•Experience in building SW & electronics tools (e.g. Labview control) strongly desired
•Willingness to occasionally travel abroad to support remote teams
•Strong communication skills and ability to work independently on assignments
